Quick Start

1. First of all you need to have administration rights on your computer, because RescuePRO will be accessing disk partitions which requires root access.
2. Insert the media you wish to recover from. Notice: If you see a message that indicates that your media has to be initialized ignore this warning and do not initialize or format the media if you need to recover data!

3. Run RescuePRO. After the application has started the main screen appears:

Choose 'Recover Videos' if you try to recover MP3 files or MPEG-1/2 files. For all other file types choose 'Normal data'

4. Now you may change the destination folder, file type to be recovered and other options. The default folder is your home\recovered. So click on 'Options...' if you want to change it. The following dialog appears:

By clicking on 'Select Folder...' (1) you can browse to a new destination directory. If you want to create a new folder, just type it in and click ok.

The filename prefix (2) means the filename created during the scan process. I.e. file001 for the first recovered, file002 for the second and so on.

(3) Allows you to specify a maximum file size. This is useful if the file sizes are too high because there are few files on the media and the sizes cannot be determined exactly.

(4) Allows you to specify an file format to search for. All other formats will be skipped. Useful if you want to skip a file that was found in the data of another file.

(5) Specifies the number of sectors the program will request at once from the reader. Reduce if you encounter problems with your media.

(6) Specifies the number of retries on errors. Move the slider to the most left to quickly skip regions with bad sectors.

5. Then choose the drive your lost media shall be recovered from by selecting the proper volume. The capacity of the selected volume (in megabytes) is shown below.

Note: If several symbols exist for your drive, try the symbol with the proper volume Name (other symbols are volumes with different sector sizes. Use them only if the common method does not work).

6. Click Start to perform a media scan. This operation can take from one second to several hours- depending on the volume size and the number of pictures formerly stored on it.

After clicking on Start you may also see the following message:

This indicates you have to enter your administrator password to continue. This is needed, because RescuePRO will be accessing disk partitions which requires root access.

If your desired picture is already displayed in the thumbnail viewer, you may cancel the scan without loosing them.

During the scan process you may also see the following message:

A read error indicates serious problems accessing the volume properly. In most cases it is caused by a physical defect.

7. Once the scan completes you will advised of the total number of recovered images and where they were saved:

Note: If you receive another message see "Troubleshooting Guide" in the Help Menu.

8. Finally your screen should appear as follows:

Note:

  • By clicking on the thumbnail you may view the image in real size.
  • You may open the folder the recovered images are stored in by clicking on 'Open...'.
  • Also if you exit the program, your recovered files still remain in your destination folder.

That is all there is to saving the files!
